Thole Rotermund has specialized in German Expressionist and Classic Modern artworks on paper since the founding of his gallery in 2000. With more than two decades of experience in this field, Rotermund has long since become one of the leading contacts for collectors throughout the entire European region. His enthusiasm for the medium of paper primarily derives from “the delight in the freedom, intimacy and immediacy of the hand drawing in all its forms and its artistic character, which is spontaneous and emotional, yet frequently also fully mature.”

Thole Rotermund gathers the greatest names of the first half of the 20th century on his gallery’s premises in Hamburg. The list of his artists ranges from Lyonel Feininger to Paul Klee, August Macke, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde and Christian Rohlfs. Many of these highlights will be brought from the Hanseatic city to southern Germany in February for art KARLSRUHE. These include Gabriele Münter’s village impression “Aus Siglingen an der Jangst” (1938) from the estate of the artist, as well as a colour lithograph by Lyonel Feininger, which debuted as part of the first big “Mail-Art-Action” at the Bauhaus exhibition in 1923. A charcoal drawing by August Macke from 1914 was sketched during what is probably the most famous journey in art history: together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet, Macke travelled to Tunisia to record numerous impressions from “One Thousand and One Nights”, always with a sketchbook in hand.
